Human Lie Detection
Introducing the BLAST(tm) Scoring Method

When it comes to Human Lie Detection or Deception Detection a number of thoughts come to mind.

  1. What is Human Lie Detection?
  2. Is it really possible to determine if someone is lying?
  3. Why should I consider being trained to recognize deception?

The first two questions are fairly easy to answer.

What is Human Lie Detection?

Human lie detection involves a number of skills one must learn in order to be truly effective and accurate. The most important skill, which is one many don’t really possess is that of situational and spatial awareness or paying attention. The attention span of human beings has dropped from 15 to 20 minutes in the past to the point where the average person has the attention span of a gold fish, about 20 seconds.

Detecting detection is actually noticing variations from normal behavior. These variants may last just a second or two, but they bare notice, because they are not indicative of the persons previous behaviors. The way it generally works is to notice the way a person moves and speaks in normal, non-threatening conversation or conditions. This is called a baseline. When asked a “threatening” question if the person lies, their physiology, psychology and neurology shift due to the cognitive overload caused by formulating the lie.

Although the average person will tell between 3 and 10 lies per day. Lying is not easy from a physical perspective. Additionally, the subconscious mind cannot lie, therefore the truth creates an emotional leak that displays itself in some form of deception indicator. This is how you can tell if someone is lying.

Is it Really Possible to Determine if Someone is Lying?

In short, the answer is Absolutely! But detecting the deception is only half the battle. The much more important question is not “Whether” or not a person lied, but rather “Why” the person lied. Deception Detection is at it’s peak of importance when it is used to get to the truth, not point out the lie, in order to create better rapport, better communication and a favorable outcome that makes everyone better because the conversation took place. Unless you are in a position where determining where and what someone is lying in order to save lives, favorable outcomes for everyone involved should be the goal.

Lying causes stress and that stress, causes us to do things outside our normal behavioral patterns, which means it is very possible to notice those signs, and therefore determine if someone is lying

Why should I consider being trained to recognize deception?

Learning to recognize and deal with deception is one of the most valuable skills one can possess. We are typically exposed to 8 to 10 lies every day if we are not in a position where people habitually lie, such as police officers, lawyers, auditors, teachers or HR interviewers, who will see many times over that number, yet will still miss about 80% of the lies they’re told.

So what are the benefits of being able to detect lies?

  1. You will increase Emotional Intelligence – People who are trained in deception detection increase the EQ (emotional quotient) significantly. When your Emotional Intelligence increases you become more effective at recognizing your own state, as well as, that of the people with whom you are communicating
  2. You will Dramatically Enhance Your Communication and Rapport Building Skills – When you see someone lie, and have the ability to determine why, and how to get to the truth, you become a much more effective communicator.
  3. Enhanced Relationships – You may think that by seeing when your friends and family are lying to you would cause great strife in a relationship, but the opposite is true. In the normal course of conversation, effectively and accurately determining the hidden emotions in a situation can help you become more persuasive & influential, as well as, empathetic to the cause behind the deception and allow the person to reveal their feelings in a non-threatening way.
  4. This Training Can have a Dramatic Impact on Your Income – Learning to spot and deal with deception causes you to instantly and automatically be perceived as highly intuitive and responsive to the needs of others. An example of how powerfully deception training can impact income, a sales professional who is fully trained in deception detection averages an increase in close rate of 20%!
